How to Make Windows Start Up Faster

I don't know about you, but I love spending the first 10 minutes of every workday watching Windows start up. It's like a Zen thing. If you'd rather get right to work, though, the following tips should help you make Windows start much more quickly.

Lighten the Load

A typical PC loads a lot of programs every time it starts. Each of the icons in your system tray (the area near your clock) represents an auto-start application. And there are probably other programs on your machine that start automatically but don't make their presence known so easily. Each autoloading app slows your boot time--a little or a lot. And because most of them continue to run in the background, they rob you of a little performance.

Before you start eliminating autoloaders, though, make sure you can undo your changes. In Windows XP, Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Select Create a restore point, click Next, call your restore point something like before removing autoloaders, and choose Create. Click Close once you've created the restore point.

In Windows Vista, select Start, Control Panel, System. Under 'Tasks' on the right side of the window, click System Protection. In the System Properties box that comes up, click Create at the bottom of the window.

XP users should now select Start, Run, type msconfig, and press . (In Vista, select Start, type msconfig.) Click the Startup tab, and you'll see a list of all your autoloading programs, each with a check box. Uncheck an item, and it will no longer load at startup. into the Search box, and press

Choose Your Autoloading Apps

Which applications should you leave checked so that they continue to autoload? First and foremost, you don't want to operate without your antivirus, firewall, and other security programs. Yes, these programs slow your PC's boot-up and shutdown, and they can even cause conflicts, but the cost of not having them running is too high to bear.

For any other program in the list, use your judgment. Don't ask yourself "Is it a good program?" but "Does it need to be on all the time?" For instance, I unchecked Adobe Elements' Photo Downloader, a program that I use whenever I download photos from my camera, because it serves no purpose when I'm not downloading photos. On the other hand, I allow Copernic Desktop Search to autoload because it needs to index my data files continually.

After unchecking the programs that you don't need to autoload at startup, click OK and reboot. Windows will load with a very wordy message box that might look like an error message. Just check Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts (the wording is slightly different in Vista) at the bottom of the dialog box and click OK.

Windows Dusting and Cleaning

If an autoloader diet doesn't sufficiently accelerate your boot-up, try these tweaks:

Clean out the Registry. The larger your Windows Registry, the longer the OS will take to boot. My favorite Registry cleaner is ChemTable's $30 Reg Organizer, which is both a powerful Registry editor and a general Windows maintenance tool. If you don't want to pay to put things in order, try the less-powerful EasyCleaner from ToniArts.

Use fewer fonts. Loading hundreds of system fonts takes time. If you have more than 500 fonts on your PC, remove a few. Sue Fisher's free The Font Thing utility will help you whittle your font selection down to size.

Add RAM. Faster hardware means faster boots (and shutdowns, and everything in between). There's no cheaper, more effective way to improve your hardware's performance than by adding RAM. See our video tip, "How to Upgrade Your RAM" for step-by-step instructions.

Thanks Kaja

How to Delete Undeletable Files in Windows

Many times when trying to remove an unwanted program, especially a piece of adware or spyware, you may run across a file that is undeletable by any normal method. When you try to remove it you'll receive the error message shown below telling you "access denied" and explaining the file may be in use. You may also receive one of the following messages.

Cannot delete file: Access is denied
There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
The file is in use by another program or user.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

So if the file is in use, how do you delete it?

Manual Method

If you already know the path to the file, please skip to Step 7
  1. Click on Start, Search, All Files and Folders
  2. Type the name of the undeletable file in the box shown
  3. Make sure the Look In box shows the correct drive letter
  4. Click Search and let the computer find the file
  5. Once the file is located, right-click on it and choose properties, make a note of the file location. Usually this is something similar to

    c:\windows\system32\undeleteablefilesname.exe
  6. Close the search box
  7. Click on Start, Run, and type CMD and Press Enter to open a Command Prompt window
  8. Leave the Command Prompt window open, but proceed to close all other open programs
  9. Click on Start, Run and type TASKMGR.EXE and press Enter to start Task Manager
  10. Click on the Processes tab, click on the process named Explorer.exe and click on End Process.
  11. Minimize Task Manager but leave it open
  12. Go back to the Command Prompt window and change to the directory where the file is located. To do this, use the CD command. You can follow the example below.

Example: to change to the Windows\System32 directory you would enter the following command and Press Enter

    cd \windows\system32

  13. Now use the DEL command to delete the offending file. Type DEL where is the file you wish to delete.

    Example: del undeletable.exe
  14. Use ALT-TAB to go back to Task Manager
  15. In Task Manager, click File, New Task and enter EXPLORER.EXE to restart the Windows shell.
  16. Close Task Manager
Programs to automatically delete a file

Remove on Reboot Shell Extension

This is a nice extension that loads into the right click menu. All you have to do is right-click on a file and choose "Remove on Next Reboot" and the file will be deleted the next time the computer restarts. Although it probably should only be used by more advanced computer users since it may be TOO easy to delete files using this program.

Pocket Killbox

A simple .exe file that you can use to delete undeleteable files, although the program will also delete temporary files, edit the HOSTS file, and more. A definite must have program when you are fighting an annoying spyware or adware program that won't remove.

Unlocker

Unlocker is another program that runs from the right click menu. Its simple and very effective. The website even has a side by side comparision of other programs that accomplish this task.
Using one of the three tools shown above, you should be able to remove those annoying undeleteable files once and for all.

Backup your hard drive

You may not know this, but Windows 98 comes with a backup utility. It may not be the best thing in the world, but it's free. Just open up My Computer and right-click a drive that you want to backup, select Properties from the popup menu. On the multi-tabbed dialog box that appears, select the Tools tab. Now, click the Backup now button. If you didn't install Backup when installing Windows 98, you will be prompted how to do so.

Checking the free space on your hard drive

Right click on My Computer icon on the desktop then click open. A window will open and will have icons of all the drives on your computer. Right click on drive c and click on properties. This will bring up another window with pie charts showing used and free space on the hard drive.

System Restore Windows XP Home and Pro versions

Windows XP has a utility called system restore. This feature allows you to roll back your registry and installed programs, among other things, to a previous point in time.
To do this, first click on the start button then move your mouse pointer to all programs and select accessories. From accessories find system tools then click on system restore. Once in the system restore, click on restore my computer to an earlier time then click next.

In the next window you'll see a calendar with bold numbers. Those are restore points, just click on one of them and click next. A message will appear that lists the changes. Approve the changes then click next. The computer will restart with the new changes you made.

You can undo the changes the same way, you just go back into the system restore and you'll see a button that says undo my last restoration and click next. Your computer will be restored to the point it was before you made the last change.

System Restore Windows 98.
In Windows 98 the system restore is a little harder to get to but performs the same function.

You need to restart the computer in dos mode. When you get to the C:\ prompt type scanreg/restore and press enter. The next screen will have a list of six dates. Choose the date that was before your computer started acting up and press enter. A message stating the system has been restored will appear. Restart the computer and the changes will take immediate affect.

With both types of system restores, Windows XP and Windows 98, you have to be careful not to go to far back. Anything you installed after the restore point will not work properly, you'll just have to reinstall.
